Fernand Auguste Vernède

Fernand Auguste Vernède, priest, was born in St. Germain, France, on November 6, 1846. He died at Annonay, France, on January 21, 1881. Father Auguste Vernede was educated in France and had made his final vows on September 17, 1869, before he came to Assumption College at Windsor, Ontario, in September 1871. He was ordained priest on July 16, 1872.
When he came to Windsor, Father Vernede was a promising teacher, but he experienced difficulty in learning the English language and therefore was employed primarily as an assistant at Assumption Parish, 1872-78. He returned to France in 1878 and died at Annonay in 1881. Father Vernede was buried in the private cemetery on the grounds of the College du Sacré-Coeur, Annonay.
Father Vernède was a good singer and at Assumption College was put in charge of vocal music. He also served as study hall and recreation master. When the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin was established in 1873, he was named director and kept this post until 1878 when he returned to France. He left behind him the memory of a kindly and holy life. Father Alfred Coté placed a window in his memory in the new chapel of Assumption College which was blessed in 1907.
